Enrolling to vote
Are you eligible to vote? Local government elections are held every two years.
Enrolment forms are available at post offices, the West Australian Electoral Commission, electorate offices of members of parliament or online at www.waec.wa.gov.au.
If you own property or operate a business within the city, but do not reside in the city, you are eligible to apply to be on the owners/occupiers roll to vote in the city’s local government election. An application form is available below or at the city’s Administration Centre or Subiaco Library.
For further updates about this year’s local government election contact the city on 9237 9222.
Because local governments provide services to both people and property, it is not only residents of the district who elect a local government. Those qualified to vote in local government elections include:
To vote individuals need to either be on the residents roll (state or federal electoral roll) or the city’s owners/occupiers roll.
Residents electoral roll
Residents who are listed on the State or Federal Electoral Roll within the boundaries of the city are automatically placed on the residents roll.
If you reside in the city and are not already on the State or Federal Electoral Roll, you need to fill out an enrolment form available at the Post Office, the Western Australian Electoral Commission, the electorate offices of Members of Parliament or at offices of the Australian Electoral Commission. Alternatively, an enrolment form can be downloaded from the Electoral website (see the link at the bottom of this page).
Owners or occupiers electoral roll
If you own property in the city, but do not live there or you operate a business in Subiaco, you may be eligible for the owners/occupiers roll.
To be eligible for the city’s owners/occupiers roll, a person must be enrolled on the State or Federal Electoral Roll where they live, and either own or have a right of continuous occupation under a lease tenancy agreement or other legal instrument of a property within the City of Subiaco. The right of continuous occupation must extend for a period of at least three months.
Where a company or body corporate owns or occupies rateable land, up to two people can be enrolled to vote on its behalf. If the same company or body corporate owns more than one property in a ward, the body is still only entitled to two votes.
The city encourages all local residents and business representatives to have their say. To check if you are correctly enrolled on the residents roll, contact the Western Australian Electoral Commission. The owners/occupiers roll can be checked at the city’s Administration Centre.
