Supporting youth through grants

The City is committed to supporting the breadth of our community from baby rhyme time at the library to positive ageing programs, and everything in between.

There are a number of initiatives that local teens and young adults can get involved in within the City, including a grant round to help support them develop both professional and personally.

The City’s Youth Achievements Grants are open to residents aged between 12 and 25, and offer up to $450 to help with associated costs of participation in developmental opportunities, events or programs.

Twenty-year-old Shenton Park resident, Sarah Guilfoyle, recently received a Youth Achievement Grant from the City to put towards a trip to Kuala Lumpur to play in an international hockey competition.

Sarah said it was a week of high-quality sport and she made some great friends and memories.

“It was a great experience getting to play such good quality games along with having a tour day to go around and see more of the country,” she said.

Another Shenton Park resident, 12-year-old Hamish Lorbeer, received a grant that went towards airfares to the Gold Coast where he represented Western Australia in the Australian Gymnastics Championships.

Hamish placed third in the under 15s synchronised trampoline, third in his individual under 13s event, and first in his double mini trampoline event.

Other successful grant applicants have put the City’s contribution towards chess tournaments, international mathematics Olympics, and overseas medical placements.

Mayor David McMullen said it was real-life experiences like this that help develop young members of our community.

“The City is proud to support the professional and personal development of local teens and young adults through these grants,” he said.

“We want all members of our community to be able to take advantage of opportunities to grow, learn, and mature.

“We hope we are helping young people to achieve their goals; and in the process, encouraging more well-rounded and engaged community members.”

The Youth Achievement Grants are open year-round. Find out more.
