Men’s Health Week at Lords

Residents and visitors to Subiaco are encouraged to get active – and bring others along – as part of Lords Recreation Centre’s International Men’s Health Week activities.

International Men’s Health Week runs from 12 to 18 June 2023, and is aimed at highlighting health challenges faced by men in Australia and worldwide.

With a focus on helping men and boys build healthy habits by identifying small changes that can impact wellbeing, the centre is inviting members to “bring a bloke for free”.

City of Subiaco Director, Development Services and long-time Lords member Alex Petrovski says implementing small, healthy habits throughout the day are key to maintaining his overall physical, as well as mental health.

“I take the time to focus on mindfulness while doing the things I love – spending time with family, fitness, friends and music. Mindfulness helps to keep me focussed and grounded. It’s all about enhancing your experience while doing the things you love. For example, I love hanging out with our young child and watching her explore, learn and grow.

He says keeping fit is a key way to maintain wellbeing amid his busy life.

“As a Director, you are working all the time. Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night because your brain is problem-solving something? That’s ok, but it’s also important to balance that.

“In my workouts I don’t have time to think about anything else – it’s just me and the barbell and that’s actually really important for your brain; allowing it to have a rest from other areas of your life enables you to return with both a stronger mind, and body.”

He urges others to take time to reflect on small ways to improve their wellbeing during International Men’s Mental Health Week.

“Health is not just about going to the gym. My tip is to think about health more holistically, in terms of everything you do. Some easy decisions can remarkably improve health – such as choosing to walk instead of drive somewhere, or saying no to a second takeaway meal for the week! It doesn’t need to be overwhelming.

“It is also important to consider your values, take time to make a list of your key values and compare them to your calendar. This will make it so much easier to make decisions around how to dedicate your time in a way that better aligns with these values. In fact, sometimes it’s the things you choose to remove or stop doing that can have the biggest positive impacts!

“I also really recommend limiting social media and focussing your efforts on something that gives you joy,” he said.
