Dementia series podcast to help record precious memories

Subiaco Library is making it easier for people with dementia and their families to record and preserve precious memories through an upcoming podcasting session.

The session – taking place on Thursday 27 July between 9.30am and 12pm – is giving the community the opportunity to record their memories as audio files that they can take home with them to cherish.

The unique event is aimed at supporting people with dementia and their families or carers, as well as providing tools and information to help those living with dementia. It’s part of the Subiaco Library’s Dementia Series which launched in May this year.

Subiaco Museum will be bringing along items and photographs from their collection to use as prompts, and library staff will be there to help with the podcasting equipment and recordings.

Mayor David McMullen said: “Across the country, more and more people are living with dementia. Without a medical breakthrough the trend will only continue.

“This podcasting session – and more broadly, the Dementia Series – is a really unique way to help support those in our community who are living with dementia and their families.

“As well as recording memories, this session is an opportunity to make new memories with your loved ones and is also a great way to meet new people, share experiences with others and develop your local support network.

“I hope our community gets something valuable out of the session and the series, and remembers that there is always help out there.”

While you’re here, borrow one of the library’s Dementia Kits that contain curated activity prompts to help stimulate memories, including music boxes, puzzles, reminiscence cards and helpful guides with engagement ideas for caregivers of those suffering memory loss. These kits are designed to be explored by family members and caregivers with those living with dementia.
