City to mark World Alzheimer’s Day with special event

The City is marking World Alzheimer’s Day this September with a practical session to help improve the lives of those living with dementia and support their carers.

As part of the City’s Dementia Series, this session will assist carers looking after someone at home to plan engaging activities with a focus on promoting independence and wellbeing.

Morning tea will also be provided to give attendees an opportunity to connect with others and build up their support network.

The session will cover how dementia can impact a person's ability to participate in activities, effective communication and the importance of a supportive environment, and suitable activities to engage someone living with dementia at home.

It will be run by facilitators from Dementia Australia who have specialist knowledge, skills and experience in this field.

The library is also offering ‘Dementia Kits’ specially curated for the City’s Dementia Series. They contain activity prompts which can be explored by family members and caregivers with those living with dementia.

The kits are intended to stimulate memories, and contain music boxes, puzzles, reminiscence cards and helpful guides with engagement ideas for caregivers of those suffering memory loss.
