City featured at local climate showcase

The City took part in a local showcase this week to help inform the community on action it’s taking on climate change, and educate residents on how they can be more sustainable in their everyday lives.

City staff spoke about the ambitious targets and initiatives in place to reduce carbon emissions, as well as giving out information about initiatives reducing waste to landfill such as FOGO.

Attendees also heard from local enterprises taking steps to better look after the environment from eliminating single-use coffee cups to the importance of circular fashion.

Mayor David McMullen said the City's participation in the event reflected its ongoing climate and sustainability work.

“We’ve been at the forefront of taking action against climate change for some years now,” he said.

“We were the first WA local government to be certified carbon neutral under the Commonwealth’s Climate Active program, we implemented FOGO earlier than government mandates at the request of our community, and we just recently committed to saving an additional 31.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year by transitioning a number of fleet vehicles to electric."

The showcase was put on by Member for Nedlands Dr Katrina Stratton MLA and included a speech from Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Environment and Climate Action the Hon Darren West MLC.

The next generation (primary and secondary students) were also invited to stand up and talk at the event at a dedicated speaker’s corner.

The City was joined at the event by other organisations and enterprises such as Western Metropolitan Regional Council, Dress for Success, City of Nedlands and Nature Play.
