City continues commitment to Men’s Shed

The City of Subiaco has signed a partnership with the Subiaco Community Men’s Shed to invest in good mental health outcomes for older men.

The partnership – worth $10,000 – will assist the Men’s Shed to attract and retain more members, and grow the level of support they can provide to vulnerable and isolated community members.

Mayor David McMullen, a member of Men’s Sheds of WA, said he was pleased to support a community organisation that has played a vital role in the Subiaco community since 2010.

“The men here are able to connect with others, and participate in meaningful activities that contribute to the community and their own wellbeing,” he said.

“With this partnership, we hope Subiaco Community Men’s Shed can continue to help a demographic – the men in our community – who through a lifetime of other priorities and responsibilities sometimes forget to prioritise their own needs and wellbeing.”

The funding will enable the delivery of an open day to showcase the organisation to the community and attract new members, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for members, the creation of a website and social media platforms, and the installation of a security and smoke detector system.

The Subiaco Community Men’s Shed supports a demographic of males who are predominantly older adults, many of whom experience loneliness or mental health issues. It provides a space for men to gather, enjoy the company of their peers, and either work on projects of their choice, teach others, or become involved in assisting with community projects.

The organisation is also welcoming to younger men and provides an inclusive, safe space for men with disabilities and health conditions such as autism, cancer and dementia. It is located behind the Tom Dadour Community Centre on Bagot Road.

In recent years, the City has funded upgrades to the Men’s Shed, including an extension to the building, new signage, and resurfacing the carpark.
