City celebrates young writers’ creativity

For over three decades, the City of Subiaco has celebrated the creativity and imagination of young writers across WA through an annual award.

This year’s award welcomed a new patron – award-winning author Craig Silvey – and over 860 entries from Karratha to Albany, and everywhere in between.

Craig Silvey said the City of Subiaco award was quite remarkable because it invited writers of various backgrounds who live in wildly diverse places to enter.

“I was humbled and really honoured when I was asked to take on the patronage of the award. It's been such an important, vital cultural institution throughout Western Australia for a long period of time,” he said.

“I'm excited about the stories, about diverse voices, about the new experiences and the wild imaginations of Western Australians. These awards really encourage and promote literature and writing to inspire a new generation of readers and writers.”

The 2023 award culminated at an award ceremony on Friday night in Subiaco where WA’s young budding authors were praised by the judges for their exceptional storytelling.

Winners were announced for each school-aged category, with Caleb Kameron from Jolimont Primary School taking out the title of overall winner for his piece, Sea Spirit.

The winners for each category:
  • Lower Primary – Caleb Kameron, Jolimont Primary School
  • Middle Primary – Anya Aryaputri-Edi, Mel Maria Catholic Primary School
  • Upper Primary – Lizetienne Burke-Hardy, Eddystone Primary School
  • Lower Secondary – Emily Natalina Rafala, Penrhos College
  • Upper Secondary – Harry Burbury, Scotch College
City of Subiaco Mayor David McMullen said, “The Craig Silvey Awards foster, inspire and celebrate young Western Australian story tellers across the state, and help provide a platform for a future writing career for those who want to pursue it.

“On behalf of the City of Subiaco I would like to thank Craig for his patronage, for sharing his passion for writing, empowering young authors and for championing the awards. We are excited for what future years will bring.”

The award-winning stories are on display at Subiaco Pop-Up Library from Monday 2 October to Sunday 29 October and will be published on the City’s website.

The full list of winners is available on the City’s website.
