  • seven to eleven years
  • ten to thirteen years

Better Beginnings

Better Beginnings is an early literacy program coordinated by the State Library of Western Australia that aims to promote the importance of reading, rhyming and talking to your baby. Subiaco residents with children aged one year and under can collect a free book and parent kit from the library if they have not already received one from their local community child health nurse.

Sue Bee's Reading Hive

Sue Bee's Reading Hive is a fun way to encourage reading among year one children and recognises the importance of developing literacy skills to assist with their future. Reading Hive members receive a stamp on their reading hive card each time they visit the library and borrow library material. After ten visits members are rewarded with a book that is theirs to keep.

The program also includes newsletters and special surprises. All year one students are welcome to join. Sue can be seen in the library – next time you’re in, see if you can spot her buzzing around!

Subi Kids Crew applications now open!

The Subi Kids Crew (SKC) program is unique opportunity for motivated children to develop their sense of civic responsibility and participation. The program gives local children the chance to learn about many aspects of citizenship, including having their say about projects and programs the city is planning and contributing to community events.  This year, SKC members were involved in a variety of activities including Perth International Arts Festival, public speaking training, assisting to choose new children’s library books and raising flags at the NAIDOC ceremony.

Applications to the Subi Kids Crew open in May each year, ready to begin in July. The process will be advertised via local schools and on this website.  Please check back closer to the date.  Places are limited and applications are assessed by a panel of staff members.
